Bhutan’s Population and Housing Census 2005 recorded 634,982 as the country’s population with a natural growth rate of 1.3%. The sex ratio of the resident population is 111 males per 100 females. With an area of 38,816sq.km and a total population of 634,982, the population density is 16 persons per sq.km. Life expectancy is 66 years for males and 66.2 years for females. Thimphu Dzongkhag, where the capital city is located, recorded a population of 98,676 persons accounting for 15.5 percent of the total population. The other Dzongkhags with a population of more than 50,000 residents are Chukha (74,387 persons) and Samtse (60,100 persons).
